A young man walked to work every day.
He worked on the 15th floor of a downtown skyscraper.
Every day he got in the lift and rode it to the floor where he worked. He usually didn’t know any of the people in the lift, but he nodded and smiled at them.
On one Wednesday morning, he followed his normal routine and entered the lift.
But halfway up to his floor, the city suffered a power failure and the lift stopped.
The young man and the strangers in the lift were trapped.
At first there was momentary panic, as all seven of them started trying to talk at the same time.
But then the young man remembered the tiny flashlight he had in his pocket.
When he turned it on, the fear dissipated. Over the next 45 minutes they were stuck together, they told jokes, laughed and even sang.
The bible says we are that flashlight. Just as the flashlight draws power from its batteries, we draw power from Jesus. As light, we dissipate fear, bring relief, and lift spirits. We don’t even have to be big to be effective. We just have to be on.
