About | Operation Starfish

Posted in Operation Starfish

In 2012 we launched our Operation Starfish Campaign and after it's amazing success we've decided to continue it in 2013. But we've changed the name slightly to Operation Starfish: Ambassadors for Christ.

The goal of Operation Starfish is to inspire church members to pray for and invite their friends, colleagues and family members to the next Alpha Course at your church.

In 2 Corinthians it says, "So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead. "Come back to God!" (5:20)

I've been lucky enough to work for a High Commission here in NZ. The High Commissioner and the staff were always positive about their country. They represented it in NZ. They promoted it, they encouraged people to visit, they made it easy for people to get information about it. They invited people to come and see for themselves and to explore it. They were never put off my someones negative response, they loved their country and were proud to promote it.

I love this verse from 2 Corinthians it makes it clear that God is using us as his High Commissioners or Ambassadors. He wants us to promote his kingdom, to encourage people to visit, to invte them to come and see for themselves.

How To Run | Alpha / Operation Starfish Sunday

Posted in Operation Starfish

What is it?

An Alpha Sunday is when a Church focuses its entire weekend services on promoting the Alpha Course to its congregation. The goal is to inspire church members to be part of the next Alpha Course, and to invite their friends to be guests on the course.

You may like to invite a speaker from the National Alpha Team to come and speak at your church as part of an Alpha Sunday.

Who is it for?

Alpha Sundays are for:

  • Churches yet to run Alpha - to introduce the course and to excite church members for evangelism.
  • Churches already running the Alpha Course - to inspire and re-envision Church members to continue being involved in evangelism through the Alpha Course

Preparation Before Hand

Create a starfish wall. These can be simple or as creative as you like. We've seen both! The idea is to give people the ability to move a starfish from one side (the beach) to the other (the water). Take over your notice board and have it somewhere noticable! So people talk about and see it every week.

Remember we are not responsible for the answer to the invitation that's God's bit. He is already working in your friends life, our bit is simply to ask, "Would you like to come and see?"

Make sure your leadership team is on board! They are going to need to be doing this too and be prepared to tell their stories.. And that is the fun part, telling the stories. Sometimes they are hilarious, sometimes they are sad. But as leaders we need to be real about our journey with our friends.

You may also like to use video clips to remind your congregation to invite someone. There are a range available on youtube that churches around the world have created. These show the funny, sad and everything inbetween side of invitation.
